Rolfe, 73 years old, completed arrangements with an undertaking establishment to handle his funeral and then committed suicide by shooting himself through the head with a revolver and leaping from the eighth floor of a hotel, was related in a page one story of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer received here Wednesday. The paper was mailed to the Wabash Plain Dealer and Times Star by Harry A. Pfeil, former resident, who is now employed at the Todd Pacific Shipyards, Inc. The account stated: "On Aug. 10, Rolfe visited the Johnson and Hamilton mortuary, which had charge of services for his wife several years ago, and told Gordon F. Hamilton and Mary F. Harold, directors of the company, he wanted to leave money sufficient for his post-death care and shipment of his cremated remains to Wabash. He was informed the state law prevented such a deposit, but a certain amount could be set aside in a trust fund, payable to the funeral directors for services rendered in the event of his death. "Accordingly, the contract was negotiated for the undertaking company to provide the casket, subsequent cremation and shipment of an engraved urn containing Rolfe's ashes to his sister in Wabash." "Mr. Rolfe, an old friend of mine from early Alaska days, said he was getting old and shaky, and would be 'stepping along.' Miss Harold was quoted as saying. 'It is not unusual for a person to prepare for death, but after he had left I suspected he had something on his mind. I even considered calling him later.'" "'The same night, she said, she forwarded the contract to Rolfe by mail. Rolfe signed the contract Aug. 11 and on the same day opened an account in the Washington Mutual Savings Bank - made out, 'P. H. Rolfe, trustee for Johnson and Hamilton.' "Returning a copy of the contract along with the bank book, to the mortuary, Rolfe kept the original in his billford, which was found on his body by one of the Coroner's deputies. Thorough to the end, Rolfe left another note on his bedroom dresser stating: 'To Whom It May Concern: The first thing to do and do it now, Call up Johnson and Hamilton, funeral directors ... I have made arrangements with them to take care of my remains. This is a plain case of suicide. Voluntarily signed, P.H. Rolfe.' "Another note, found in one of his pockets read: 'Find instructions on dresser in my room, Savoy Hotel." This referred to still another note, in which Rolfe said he had written a woman acquaintance all about 'doing away with myself.' In it, Rolfe said he had suffered for 25 years. 'I just can't take it any longer,' he wrote. Born in Wabash, he went to Alaska about the turn of the century and operated his own river boats for many years. He was a brother of Mrs. Carl Haupt of this city. ADDITIONAL OBITUARY - Plain Dealer, Wabash (IN) Mrs. Carl Haupt has received word of the death of her brother, Preston H. Rolfe, Seattle, Wash., which occurred Friday afternoon. Mr. Rolfe was born in Wabash in 1871 to Mr. and Mrs. William H. Rolfe. He has resided in Alaska and the West for the past 56 years. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. O.D. Hutchens, Johnson City, Tenn., and Mrs. Haupt. The body will be cremated and sent to Wabash. Burial will be in Falls cemetery.
