Joyce Logan Curtis moved to Choteau when she and Grant Curtis were married [Dec. 30] 1946, [in Billings] after having been raised along the Rims in Billings, and completing the Cadet Corps nurse's training, as an RN. She was born Aug. 28, 1926, the third daughter of Dick and Marjorie (Powell) Logan. Dick had a cattle ranch that wrapped around the Billings Airport, which he founded and managed. His wife Marge was for many years the café owner there. When Grant and Joyce married, Grant joined his dad in the John Deere business and Joyce began nursing even as they started a family. Over the next dozen years, they added children [three sons, daughter, son-in-law, and daughter-in-law--names omitted]. Joyce jumped into the community with her passion for volunteering and involvement in her children's activities. She worked with Rainbow Girls, sang in the Lutheran choir and began her political life as an active Republican. Over the years, she poured her life of service into Eastern Star, was for 50 years the Red Cross blood chairperson, was an active Lutheran, a den mother for her Cub Scouts, for nearly two decades her children's swim team transporter and cheerleader, Bible camp nurse and she even worked nights at the nursing home. She was elected the queen of Daughters of the Nile, and was dedicated to the service and fellowship of Nile and Eastern Star. When a grandson came home with severe birth injuries, she helped care for him and, as she learned of the challenges of kids with disabilities, she worked with Choteau Activities and served on the Regional and State Councils for Developmental Disabilities for many years. She and Grant danced the night away at President Reagan's Inaugural Ball in 1984. Joyce was three times a Montana Republican National Convention delegate, and some in Teton County called her "Mrs. Republican" for her dedication. Her elephant collection was extensive. After Grant retired from farming, they traveled with their motor home during the winters, visiting friends and relatives across the Southwest. Grant died in 2000. Through the years, we hadn't a clue how she found time or energy to make prom dresses and bridal gowns, knit Christmas stockings, help with school projects, teach many to dance, make gifts for Shrine Hospital kids, attend games, do special nursing for the ailing, play bridge, swim and much more. Her energy and determination will be forever missed by her children; her [nine] grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and Grant's sister [names omitted]. Joyce passed away in Choteau of natural causes on Sept. 20, 2010, but we share joy for her as she reunites with Grant, her parents, her three sisters, two infant daughters and two grandsons who preceded her in death. We salute our Little Red Hen who did, the Little Choo Choo that could, and the Unsinkable Molly Brown. She was truly one of a kind.
