Description	:	Private, Company I, 18th Massachusetts Infantry, GAR (The following provided by Donald Thompson) The son of Joshua and Ruth (Gifford Cowen. He married Sarah J. Gifford at Dartmouth, MA on Sept. 8, 1850. They were the parents of Emma, born March 20, 1851; Charles D., born May 21, 1855; Andrew, born July 24, 1857; Annie G., born Aug. 26, 1862; and Arthur C., born July 4, 1870. Cowen was a 35 year-old Carriage Maker from Dartmouth, MA, when he enlisted at that town on and was mustered into the 18th Mass. Infantry on August 7, 1862 as a Private in... Read More	Private, Company I, 18th Massachusetts Infantry, GAR (The following provided by Donald Thompson) The son of Joshua and Ruth (Gifford Cowen. He married Sarah J. Gifford at Dartmouth, MA on Sept. 8, 1850. They were the parents of Emma, born March 20, 1851; Charles D., born May 21, 1855; Andrew, born July 24, 1857; Annie G., born Aug. 26, 1862; and Arthur C., born July 4, 1870. Cowen was a 35 year-old Carriage Maker from Dartmouth, MA, when he enlisted at that town on and was mustered into the 18th Mass. Infantry on August 7, 1862 as a Private in Co. I. Cowen served with the 18th Mass. in 1862 during the Peninsula Campaign, Second Bull Run, Shepherdstown, and Fredericksburg. He was admitted to McClellan Gen. Hospital, Philadelphia on June 23, 1863 with a contusion of the knee and remained until transferred on May 8, 1864 to Co. F, 11th Veteran Reserve Corps. He was later on detached service as a Carpenter at Briggs Barracks, Washington and was mustered out of military service at Washington on August 26, 1864. On Nov. 19, 1864 he enlisted for a second time and was mustered into the 19th Uattached Company, Mass. Volunteer Militia as a Private on Nov. 25, 1864. He was mustered out of military service at Gallups Island, Boston Harbor on June 27, 1865. Following his discharge Cowen resided at Dartmouth for 15 years where he was employed as a Carriage Maker and Wheelwright. He then resided in North Attleboro, MA, Providence, RI, and the National Soldiers Home in Togus, ME.
