Arthur Orr, one of the oldest and best known citizens of Winfield, passed away early this morning at his home, 815 East Eighth Avenue, after a lingering illness of several years' duration. Mr. Orr was 72 years of age. He was born in Tyrone, Ireland, on February 27, 1845, and at the age of two years came to this country with is parents, locating in Philadelphia. At the age of eight years, after the death of his parents, he went to Bordentown, New Jersey, where he lived with relatives until 1863 when he enlisted in the Thirtieth Regiment of New Jersey, volunteer infantry at Flemington. He was in Virginia most of the time, participating in the battle of Chancellorsville and did guard duty along the river for four months. His term of enlistment expired and he re-enlisted in September 1864, in Co. G. Second Regiment, N.J. Volunteer cavalry and was stationed along the Mississippi river. He was wounded in the battle of Egypt Station and after spending two months in the hospital he was mustered out in 1865 at the end of the war at Viksburg, Miss. He returned to New Jersey and lived there and in Illinois until 1869 when he came to Kansas and pre-empted a claim, seven miles northeast of Winfield. In 1875 he was married to Christina Meece. To this union was born seven children, all of whom survive him. In 1903 he moved to Winfield where he has since resided. He has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal church for about thirty years and was an active worker. The surviving relatives left to mourn his loss are the wife and seven children, Mrs. R.A. Meadows, E.S. Orr, Mrs. James Fuller, and Will, all of Winfield, Robert Orr and Miss Bess Orr of Los Angeles, Cal., and Mrs. Walter Hodges of Independence, and two brothers, W.J. Orr and Thomas Orr who reside in Winfield. Funeral services will be held at 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon from the residence in charge of the Rev. H.E. Wark, pastor of the Methodist church.
