Branch of Service: Army Rank: Private Date of Service: March 31, 1944 to December 13, 1944 Stationed at: 85th Evacuation Hospital, Camp Swift, Texas Special Duties Assigned: Medical Aid Man; Army Code #657 August, the father of 4 children was drafted at the age of 37 years because he was the younger of the 2 meat cutters employed by Frescoln’s Market in Winner, South Dakota. He luckily only served a short time. Life was difficult for his family. His travel pay to return home was $33.55. He was 6ft tall and weighed 132 lbs. when separated from the Army at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. August had given permission for Harriette to rent out a bedroom in their home to garner more income for the family. A young man answered the ad and was thrilled to be included in this family. Meals were included in the room and board. The children were thrilled to have this fellow living and spending quality time with them as they were missing their father. One night the “boarder” did not show up for dinner or for the rest of the night and the family was totally surprised, as he had never missed before. The next morning a police officer called and explained that the “boarder” had gotten drunk and disorderly at a bar downtown and was arrested. When fingerprinted they found that he was AWOL from the Army and hiding out in Winner. August died January 13, 1969
