When? picture of last week was a person sacred to the memory of the entire community, Basil Cowell, who was the first lad from this vicinity killed in action in the World War. The picture was taken in the spring of 1917 on the north side of the old school building. Ed Firkins, who has been visiting here the past week, recalls that he was at home on a furlough from the Navy at the time. Basil Cowell and Ferrell Albert, members of Co. D, 168th Infantry, were also at home and the three boys were taking pictures. The picture of Bail was published in the Union in 1921 when he was brought home from France for burial. The funeral service, which was held in the Moravia Park, is said to have attracted one of the largest crowds ever assembled in Moravia. The Moravia Post of the American Legion, Basil Cowell Post, No. 361, was named for the first lad from Moravia killed in action. He was originally interred in France and brought home and re interred in 1921. From contributor # 47205881
