Calvin was born in 1834 in Marlboro Co., SC and died 1890 . Calvin was a Private in Company G, Twenty-third Infantry (Hatch's Regiment, Coast Rangers). Calvin join the regiment in 1861, along with William Gray and Samuel Haithcock. Suggested edit: Hi Steve, Calvin, Sr. is buried about a mile from Brownsville Baptist Church, up Dunbar Hwy on the north side, about 250 yards from the paved road. He has a grave marker, although broken. In my records, I have 1834-1890 as the dates. I will get a picture when it cools off. He likely died on the same tract, but at the intersection of Dunbar Hwy and Ayers Rd (turns into Gray Rd after crossing). He was allegedly shot in the leg by a brother (why and which one, I don't know). He later walked about 2/3 of mile from his home at what we call the Marie place, to a log cabin at the intersection mentioned earlier (north and west of) which my great grandfather lived in. Calvin's leg was gangrene. My great grandfather went to Blenheim and got Dr. Napier. The leg was amputated on the front porch. Calvin later died anyway. Dr. Napier's amputation kit is in the Museum in Bennettsville, SC. I'm guessing they buried the leg first, then later buried him with it. He was buried near the road to the church, as it existed then. The current paved road has moved south from the grave. The uncle of my great grandfather was Samuel Haithcock, Jr., who was the brother of Mariah and Emmaline Haithcock, who married Calvin and brother William. William and Emmaline are my great great great grandparents. Legend is his grave was dug the day before burial, and that night a storm came in and lightning struck the the gravesite, throwing dirt back into the grave. Allegedly, lightning struck again the next night and broke the grave marker. I'm sure the marker wasn't placed until later, so likely struck at a much later time. The stone is broken, and for decades, a Mock Orange tree stood sentry over the grave until the last year, or three. It was apparently struck by lightning and burned the trunk.
