Read More	The Butte Gazette, Thursday, December 29, 1955 Last Rites Held for Carl Cunningham Funeral services for Carl Cunningham, aged 61 years who passed away suddenly Tuesday, December 20th at his home in Naper following a severe heart attack were held Friday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock at the Naper Community Hall with the Rev. Bernard Sayler officiating assisted by the Rev. Locker of Burke, S. Dak. Music during the services was by the Congregational Choir who sang “Going Down the Valley” by a quartet composed of Mrs. Harold Fischer, Mrs. Ronald Anderson, Reo Ludemann and Edward Peppel. Mrs. Edward Pepel was accompanist for both groups. Gilead Lodge 233 A.F. & A.M. had charge of part of the services at the hall which was conducted by Wm. K Hansen, Wm. P. Wills, Walter G. Sire with Earl Conklin as Chaplin. The Naper VFW Post was in charge of services at the graveside and according their departed brother-in-arms full military honors. Pallbearers were: George Alexander Sr., Lester Andersen, Howard Allpress, Max Brown, Edward Peppel, and Carl Tienken. Carl Leroy Cunningham obituary furnished by FAG volunteer #48559408 Carl Leroy Cunningham, son of Henry O. and Katherine Cunningham was born December 28, 1893, at Butte, Nebraska and passed away in his Naper home at 2 a.m. December 20, 1955, at the age of 61 years, 11 months, and 23 days. He seemed to be in good health and carried the rural mail that day as he had been faithfully doing for almost 35 years. He was left an orphan at the age of eleven years. He was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. T. W. Bolton of Naper and lived in their home until he was fifteen after which he became entirely self-supporting. He was employed mainly in railroad work throughout Western United States until he was twenty-three. He was united in marriage with Stella Vance on October 27, 1917. He enlisted in the U.S. Army December 9, 1917, and was shipped overseas as an engineer about May 1, 1918, where he served in Europe until June, 1919. After his army discharge, he and his wife spent some time in Canada and then returned to Boyd County to farm and carry mail. During World War II, he enlisted and served a short time in the Merchant Marine. A daughter, Mary Ann; two sons, Harry and Paul, preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn his wife, Stella, a daughter, Ioan Reber of Naper; a son, Raymond V. of Odessa, Texas; three grandchildren; a sister, Mabel Kramer of Herrick, South Dakota; three foster sisters; many other relatives and friends. Carl was a member of the Gilead Masonic Lodge and American Legion of Butte and Veterans of Foreign Wars at Naper. He attended Naper Congregational Church. Carl carried mail above and beyond the call of duty. In no other manner would he have been so contented and happy. ______________________________________________________ A Continuing History of Naper, Nebraska Neighbor Helping Neighbor, 1892-1992 Nebraska State Historical Society Page 61 Carl and Stella (Vance) Cunningham Carl Leroy Cunningham (1893-1955) and Stella Elnora Vance (1895-1981) were married October 27, 1917, at Boyd County courthouse witnessed by Orville Vance and Eva (Rockholm) Reetz. Soon after their marriage, Carl volunteered to serve in World War I. After being trained in the east, Stella watched him embark from New York City where he was sent to France. He served there in the engineer Corps taking supplies to the front lines. During this time Stella was a Boyd County rural and Naper school teacher. She received her education in the Naper school and Wayne State College. Carl's formal education was at Butte. After his mother died when he was around age 10 (the father Henry O. had previously abandoned the family), Carl and his sister Mabel (Kramer) were on their own. Mabel was adopted by the Sprenkles of Naper. Carl lived in Milford, NE, a short time with Lulu Bolton and her mother. He was too independent to enjoy this life and struck out on his own -- quote Carl, “I hit the rails.” He worked for the railroad in Texas and other southwestern states. To mention an insight which demonstrates Carl's integrity -- he was found near the tracks one day in Texas while he was in an unconscious state with a high fever. A stranger found him, put him in a hospital where Carl was diagnosed with erysipelas. The stranger paid all medical costs. Carl, years later, contacted and repaid the amount three times to the Masonic lodge in that Texas Town. All he knew was that the stranger was a Mason. Carl later became a member of the Butte Masonic lodge. Stella was an Eastern Star. They and four children were members of Naper Congregational Church. Stella served faithfully and generously as church treasurer and Sunday school helper and was a member of the women's group and VFW auxiliary for many years until she moved to Norfolk in 1956 due to Carl's untimely 1955 death. Carl and Stella did not have time before he sailed to France for a wedding trip. After his return, they traveled to north of Edmonton, Canada, in the Peace River country to visit Carl's father who had homesteaded there after he abandoned his family. He thought Stella's pancakes were the best he ever ate! They returned to Naper where Carl farmed on a rented place one and one-forth miles northwest. On the last day for application submission to qualify for rural carrier examination, Carl took wagon and team to St. Charles to intercept the train so a letter would be properly postmarked and on its way. As a result, he became a carrier and faithfully served for 35 years. Carl and Stella were devoted parents of Mary Ann (died in infancy), Ioan, Charles Harry, Raymond Vance, and Paul Dean. Harry at 18 and Paul, 20, were killed in car accidents in 1941 and 1950. Ioan is Mrs. Clinton Reber of Hoskins, NE. Ray married Lois Spease of Fremont, lives in Bella Vista, AR, after retirement of both from Omaha school system. Carl was a well read man and encouraged his family to strive for self improvement through literature and travel.
