Description	:	Charles D. Tevis was born about 1838 in Pennsylvania, the son of Joseph D. Tevis and Adeline R. Patton Tevis. Charlie enlisted as a 23 yr. old resident of Cedar Bluffs, Cedar Co., Iowa on June 24,1861 at Tipton, Ia. in Co. A, 5th Iowa Infantry. He was sentenced to seven days in the guardhouse for breaking the guard at Glasgow, Mo. on Oct.1,1862. Listed as M.I.A. after the Battle of Iuka, Ms. on Sept.19,1862. Listed as A.W.O.L. since Sept.20 on a Co. return dated Sept.30,1862. Listed as deserted May 22,1863 while his regiment and company were charging the rebel fortifications at... Read More	Charles D. Listed as A.W.O.L. since Sept.20 on a Co. return dated Sept.30,1862. Listed as deserted May 22,1863 while his regiment and company were charging the rebel fortifications at Vicksburg, Ms. and was reported last month as A.W.O.L. on a Co. return dated June 30,1864. Returned to his company after the capitulation of Vicksburg. Charles was wounded and captured Nov.25,1863 at the Battle of Mission Ridge, Tn. After spending the winter in captivity at Belle Isle, Va. he was transferred with the other prisoners to the prison stockade at Andersonville, Ga. He died of scorbutus in the prison on Aug.24,1864 and was buried in the prison graveyard. His name does not appear on the Iowa Monument at the National Cemetery at Andersonville, Ga. His name is misspelled as TEEVIS on his gravestone and he is buried in grave number 6687.
