Ryan April 6, 1923 to March 3, 1992 Chester M. (Chet) Ryan, 68, of Nevada died of a cerebral hemorrhage at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines. He was born to Charles Arthur and Caroline Belle (Sparks) Ryan at Murray on April 6, 1923, and lived in Nevada for 40 years. He was owner and operator of Chet Ryan Mortuary in Nevada. He was married on June 14, 1947, in Radcliffe and is survived by Gertrude of Ames; two daughters, Cynthia A. Ryan of Mission, Kan., and Cheryl K. Mueller of St. Charles; a son, Charles Steven Ryan of Redland, Calif.; two grandchildren; and a brother Charles Vernon Ryan of Jefferson. He was a member of the American Legion Post #48, Nevada Masonic Lodge AF & AM 99, Veterans of Foreign Wars Nevada Post 2209 and the Missouri Funeral Directors Association. He served with the Marine Corps in World War II in the Pacific Theater. Services were held March 6 at the Memorial Lutheran Church with burial in the Nevada Cemetery. Military graveside services were conducted by VFW Post 2209. A memorial fund has been established. From Nevada Journal February 8, 1985 (page 1) Mortuary opening By ANNETTE FORBES NEVADA -- After an absence of several years, Chet Ryan, a long time Nevada resident has returned to this community to open a mortuary. Chet Ryan's father, C. A. Ryan, bought a funeral home here in 1944. Chet Ryan joined his father here one year later in 1945 upon his return from the Marine Corps. After several years apprenticeship with his father, the younger Ryan went to the University of Mortuary Science in Kansas City. He graduated in 1948, received his embalming license in 1949 and his funeral home director's license in 1953. C. A. Ryan retired in 1973. Chet Ryan and his wife, Gertrude, raised three children in Nevada, Steven, Cynthia and Cheryl. Steven is a 1967 graduate of Nevada High School and a 1971 graduate of Simpson College. In 1972 Steven graduated from the Indiana College of Mortuary Science in Indianapolis. He was with his father's business in Nevada until 1976. Chet Ryan left Nevada in 1979 to pursue other endeavors. During his five year absence he was a partner in an Omaha mortuary. In February of 1984, Chet Ryan returned to Nevada and purchased a house at 5th an G Ave. The house had been a favorite style of Ryan's for a long time. It has taken 12 months to completely renovate the home, with some finish work still remaining to be done on the exterior. The finished product is a modern facility that has been in the designing and planning for many years. Chet Ryan says it incorporates all the positive and progressive aspects that the has seen in mortuaries over the years. The mortuary includes a new reception room, an office, large chapel, and family room on the first floor; private living quarters, casket selection room and ultra modern preparation room on the second floor. There is also a new four car garage with storage and well lighted parking area that is considered ample.
