Description	:	Son of William & Jane Wampler Prince. He was born on August 15, 1889, in Bloomington, IN. His occupation was a farmer. Entered the service on September 15, 1917, in Bloomington. Sent to Camp Taylor, KY then transferred to Company K, 151st Infantry, then to Headquarters Company, 162nd Infantry. He went overseas on June 11, 1918. Drowned in the Marne River on July 21, 1918. He was married to Mary Ophelia (Holsapple) Prince at the time of his death. Prince, 161st infantry, a Monroe county soldier, is the third to make the supreme sacrifice on the battle front in France. The fatal news came this afternoon from the war department to his wife who lives 5 miles south of town with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Prince. The message states that Prince drowned in the river Marne during a battle, trying to make a crossing while in action. Prince was age 28 and sailed overseas on June 11th. Mr. and Mrs. Prince have only been married about six months. The bride is a daughter of Robert Holsapple of Campbellsburg and the husband had written quite often to his wife and friends here. Prince was born and raised in this community. The brothers are William and Charles Prince and the sisters are Mrs. Ralph Stipp and Miss Nellie Prince. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Bloomington Daily Telephone 09/11/1918 The death of Private Earl Prince in France by drowning was not made known by wire, and the first information was the following letter to his bride of six months, who lives with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Prince, just south of town: [ Headquarters First Corps Replacement Battalion, American Expeditionary Forces, July 21, 1918: My Dear Madam: It is with sincere regret that I have to inform you of the death, by accidental drowning, this afternoon of your husband, Private Earl Hull Prince (1565400) Headquarters company 161st infantry U. S. army. At the time he met his death he was swimming in the River Marne. Your husband was buried with military honors in the cemetery adjoining the Catholic church, Chelles, France, the exact location of his grave being recorded in the office of the mayor, and a cross bearing his identification tag erected at the head of his grave. Private Prince had many friends among his comrades and his funeral was attended by the officers and men of the entire command. With expressions of sympathy with you in your bereavement, I am H. C. SNYDER, Major, U. S. Marines, Commanding. ] Hull Prince enlisted a year ago last June but was refused at Indianapolis. However, he was among the first drafted men which left Bloomington last September 23, 1917, going to Camp Taylor and from there to Camp Shelby, Mississippi, where he remained until called overseas July 11th. Several letters had been received from him by home folks, but not until some time after his death. The last one that was written was dated July 16th, five days previous to his death. Private Prince was home on a furlough last November at which time he was married to Miss Ophelia Holsapple of Campbellsburg, Indiana. Mr. Prince would have been 29 years of age August 15th and has been a resident of Bloomington all his life, having made scores of friends everywhere he went. Besides a wife, he leaves to mourn his loss, his parents Mr. and Mrs. William Prince, two brothers William Jr., and Charles Prince, and two sisters, Mrs. Ralph Stipp and Nell Prince, all of whom reside just south of Bloomington.
