(Lewiston Journal) Belgrade, Me., Aug. 12 (Special). - Elihus Stevens, aged 101 years and 6 months, died at the home of his son, Asa C. Stevens, of Belgrade, whom he had been visiting, on Saturday, after a very brief illness. Mr. Stevens had been living with one of his sons in Readfield for the past year, and left there a few days ago to visit his children in Belgrade and Smithfield. Mr. Stevens was born in Belgrade, Jan. 26, 1788, and his early life was passed on a farm. He was a volunteer in the war of 1812, and rather than appear with an old gun, bought one with his own money of Mr. Greenwood Childs, then of Augusta, Maine. He received a pension of $8 per month. Mr. Stevens was a second cousin of Hon. Lot M. and A.P. Morrill. He was married three times, first to Betsey Grant of Smithfield, Maine. His second wife was a granddaughter of the British General Burgoyne, and his third wife, Mary E. Grant, was a sister of his first wife. He was the father of twenty-two children, the most of whom are now living, and his descendants in the third, fourth and fifth generations numbered 326 at the time of his 101st birthday. Mr. Stevens visited the Legislature last winter and a recess was taken and the old gentleman tendered a royal reception, which the aged veteran highly enjoyed. He has voted at every Presidential election for the last eighty years. Mr. Stevens was a remarkable man for one of his years, and a short time before his death might have been taken for a man eighty or eighty-five years of age. He was well and hearty, straight as an arrow, and his mind was clear. He never used liquor or cider unless prescribed by a physician and but one chew of tobacco, which he used to say was sufficient for a lifetime. At an early age he joined the Free Will Baptist Church, of which he was a member at the time of his death. He had a large fund of anecdotes of long ago. He told me he could remember hauling an ox load of beans to Augusta and selling them for five shillings per bushel. At that time there were but two stores there. He remembered the first plow he ever saw and at that time was but fifteen years of age.
