Description	:	187th Glider Infantry Regiment, WWII. ∼Fred Colombe was born on April 7, 1925 in Mellette County, South Dakota, to David and Amy Colombe. From the time of his birth until 1942, Fred lived in Winner and St. Francis. Fred joined the service as soon as he healed after an appendectomy. At Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, on July 1, 1943, Private Colombe entered into active service of the Armed Forces. He served in the United States until March 19, 1944. Read More	187th Glider Infantry Regiment, WWII. ∼Fred Colombe was born on April 7, 1925 in Mellette County, South Dakota, to David and Amy Colombe. From the time of his birth until 1942, Fred lived in Winner and St. Francis. Fred joined the service as soon as he healed after an appendectomy. At Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, on July 1, 1943, Private Colombe entered into active service of the Armed Forces. He served in the United States until March 19, 1944. He was trained as a parachutist and joined Company "C" of the 187th Glider Infantry. Colombe served at Luzon in the Philippine Islands with his company. His sister, Bea Mulford of Kenesaw, Nebraska, remembers Private Colombe being home for Christmas on leave before he was sent overseas. She noted that he was very quiet and had deep dimples in his cheeks and brown, wavy hair. On March 11, 1945, Private Colombe gave his life for his country while fighting the enemy in the area of Tanay Hill, Luzon, Philippine Islands. He was buried in the United States cemetery No. 1 at Nasugbu, Luzon, Philippine Islands. Captain Charles A. Olson of the 187th Glider Infantry wrote a letter to his parents. The following is an excerpt from his letter: Fred's passing away is deeply felt by all the officers and enlisted men of this company. God took your son from us but in his place he left the memory of an excellent soldier and a loyal friend. His absence from this company is deeply felt by all of us and his deeds in combat will be an inspiration to all the officers and men for the difficult tasks which lay ahead of us. At the time of his death, his survivors included his parents and his brothers and sisters: Irvin, David, Myrtle, Ruby, Leona, Lester, Beatrice, and Maria.
