Description	:	Word was received November 17th by James (Brannaugh) Brennan of this city, from the War Department, that his nephew Fred James Roach, Co. A, 339th Machine Gun Battalion, died of pneumonia in France, October 6, 1918. Fred was born October 21, 1886, at Plymouth, Ransom County, North Dakota to parents James and Maria (Brannaugh) Roach. After the death of his mother, March 4, 1896, he made his home with his uncle, James Brennan up to the time of his departure with the boys in the June draft. From here he went to Camp Dodge, Iowa, and was... Read More	Word was received November 17th by James (Brannaugh) Brennan of this city, from the War Department, that his nephew Fred James Roach, Co. A, 339th Machine Gun Battalion, died of pneumonia in France, October 6, 1918. Fred was born October 21, 1886, at Plymouth, Ransom County, North Dakota to parents James and Maria (Brannaugh) Roach. After the death of his mother, March 4, 1896, he made his home with his uncle, James Brennan up to the time of his departure with the boys in the June draft. From here he went to Camp Dodge, Iowa, and was in training only six weeks, when his detachment was ordered overseas. He arrived in France the latter part of August, just slightly more than a month before his death. Memorial services in his honor were held at St. Aloysius Catholic Church Tuesday morning, November 18th, and Father Hart paid just tribute to his memory. During the years that he worked as a plumber he made many friends, and no one that knew him long knew that he had met in Fred Roach a man in the truest sense - quiet, unassuming, yet clean cut - a moral man. It is with a sense of pride that we knew you Fred, that we too would place our wreath "where the flowers of memory lie," with the hope that the warm sun may kiss into bloom upon your grave the fairest flowers of far off France. NOTE: His remains returned to the US May 31, 1921, and was buried at St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery in Lisbon, North Dakota. (Ransom County Gazette, December 12, 1918, pg 1 col. 3)
