Mustered out Sept. 28, 1864, Davenport, Iowa, expiration of 3 year term of service. ----------- Based on enlistment, his service included the battle of Shiloh. The unit fought 10 hours in the infamous "Hornet's Nest" on the first day repelling attack after attack. It was the last to leave the advanced line. This gave Buell time to reinforce the rear lines and snatch victory from defeat. The 8th, entirely cut off, fought until they could fight no longer, out of ammunition, threw down their arms only to see many of their number shot down after they had surrendered. The few of the 8th who escaped capture were placed in a consolidated regiment called the Union Brigade which distinguished itself at the Siege of Corinth in May and the Battle of Corinth in October. The regiment was reorganized in 1863 at St Louis, then participated in the suicidal frontal assault of Ft Beauregard (May 19 & 22) at Vicksburg and the siege that followed. After return to Memphis for provost duty, the 8th repulsed a surprise attack by the guerilla troops of the notorious Nathan Bedford Forrest on Aug 21 1864.
