Carlton was born in Indiana, December 24th, 1845, and died March 29th, 1915. He moved to Missouri at the close of the Civil war, here he met Miss Emma W. They came to Kansas in the fall and settled on a claim six miles east of Derby, they moved to their present home in Cowley county in the spring of 1881. He enlisted in the Civil war June 1862 at Elletsville, Indiana, Co. A, 52nd Reg. Under Captain Shrader. He reenlisted Aug. 1863 in 117 Reg. under Capt. W. D. Hughes Vol. Infantry. He enlisted the third time in Company One, Tenth Indiana Reg., Cavalry under Capt. James E. Mather. He was honorably discharged September 1865. He leaves to mourn his departure his widow, two brothers and two sisters, Winfield Carlton of Kansas City, Missouri, Dove Carlton of Canada, Miss Lizzie Goeham of Boler, Mo., Mrs. Carrie Shirley of Shawnee, Oklahoma, together with a host of neighbors and friends. Funeral services were held in the Mulvane Methodist church, March 31st, 1915, conducted by Rev. F. L. Ruthledge, and interment was made in the Mulvane Cemetery. --------------------------------- GABRIEL W. CARLTON, who is one of the most substantial and prosperous farmers of Cowley County, Kansas, lives in section 10, Maple township. He has been a resident of the county since March, 1885, although he entered the state in 1871. He was born in Monroe County, Indiana, near Bloomington, December 24, 1845, and is the son of William Carlton. William Carlton was born in North Carolina, and located in Indiana in 1821, as one of the pioneers of that state. In October, 1853 he moved to Bates County, Missouri. He was a lifelong farmer, and died in Bates County, in 1855. He was twice married, and the maiden name of Gabriel W. Carlton's mother was Harriet Reddick. She is a native of North Carolina, and now lives at Aurora, Missouri, having attained the age of seventy-eight years. William Carlton's deceased wife was Polly Hall, also a native of North Carolina. Each marriage resulted in eight children, and of the first marriage the following four are living: William Rufus; Leander P.; Hosea A.; and John M., a druggist at Martinsville, Indiana, who is a graduate fo the University of Bloomington. Of the second marriage, six are living: David, who is a farmer in North Dakota; Gabriel W.; Martha who lives in Bates County, Missouri; Sidney, who is a farmer in Oklahoma; Winfield,who keeps a boarding house in Kansas City, Kansas; and Amanda who lives in Oklahoma. Gabriel W. Carlton obtained a common school education, and remained at home until he attained the age of twenty-five years. In 1871, he located in Kansas, and took up 160 acres of land in Rockford township, Sedgwick County. He lived there twelve years, when he disposed of his farm, and bought and sold cattle. In March, 1885, he bought from Mary Renfro, the south half of the northeast quarter, and the north half of the southeast quarter, of section 10, in Maple township. This property was originally taken up by John Guyman. A small house stood on the place, and a few acres had been broken. In 1887, Mr. Carlton purchased the southwest quarter of section 10, from Andrew Walck. Of this, 40 acres had been broken, and the farm was well fenced. In 1888, he bought, of Andrew Walck, 87 acres in the northwest quarter of section 10, in Maple township. He made many improvements upon his purchases, which he now has in first class condition, and on which he is a large producer of grain, and of cattle and hogs. Mr. Carlton is an enterprising and conscientious farmer, and is respected by all who know him. Gabriel W. Carlton was married February 29,1872, to Emma W. Heath, of Bates County, Missouri, a daughter of William and Jennie (Ray) Heath. Her parents were both born in Kentucky, her father being a farmer and stock raiser. He died in 1890 and his widow lives at Butler, Missouri. They were the parents of the following children: Emma W., the wife of Mr. Carlton; Bessie, who lives in Trinadad, Colorado; Sallie, who is the wife of S.H. Sturm, of Mulvane, Kansas; Lida, who is the wife of James Henry, a barber of Mulvane, Kansas; and Endora, who resides with her mother in Butler, Missouri. Mr. Carlton is, politically, a republican and has served as township trustee and in other offices. In June, 1862, at Ellettsville, Indiana, Mr. Carlton enlisted as a private in Company A, 54th Reg., Indiana Infantry, under Capt. Dan Shrader and Col. Ross. His term having expired, he reenlisted in August, 1863, in Company E, 117th Reg., Ind. Vol. Inf., under Capt. William B. Hughes and Col. Thomas J. Bradly. He was in the battles of Greenville, Rogersville, Clinch Moutain, Walker Ford, Knoxville and Strawberry Plains. His term expired and he enlisted for a third time in Company I, 10th Reg., Ind. Vol. Cav., under Capt. James A. Mathers, and Col. Ben Gresham. He then took part in the engagements at Franklin, Nashville, Spring Hill, Sugar Creek Gap, Columbia, Spanish Fort, Fort Blakely, amd many others. He was honorably discharged in September, 1865. At Spring Hill, Tennessee, he was shot in the neck, and at Clinch Moutain, Tennessee, he was taken prisoner, but managed to escape in less than fifteen minutes.
