Description	:	Melissa A Davis, great, great-granddaughter of Henry C Draper,transcribed word for word, from brown paper, this accounting of Henry Draper's life on 1-21-06. I believe it to have been written by my great-grandmother Mattie Jane Draper Davis, wife of James Williard Davis, sometime after 1921. Henry Draper married Laura Louisa Ellis _____ by this home soon. This marriage they decided to seek a home somewhere in the west and accompanied by Morgan Ellis + wife Martha started for MO, traveling by boat to St Louis Mo, where they bought 1 wagon oxen and other suplies + started for Centrel MO. They spent their first winter near what is now Palo Pinto in Burton Co Mo. living in the home of Mr + Mrs Dick. In the spring the Drapers bought a 40 acre farm SE of Windsor. Henry Co, Mo. There was 10 acres of land a log house sold broken on this farm and a sware(sp?) log house. They were the poored possesors of the only cook stove and bedstead in the surrounding county. Scarcely were they settled in this new home when my father was called to the service of his country, he served in The fear and loneliness during those trying times alone in the house with her only boy George William was borne bravely by my mother Maurauding Southern Soldiers came and robed her of her jewelry (even her wedding ring) blankets and other valuables. she plead with them not to take her bedding and leave her baby to suffer cold but of no avail. my father gave her a fine shawl. she kept this hid for many months, determined that no one take her beautiful shawl. After the close of that cruel war, my father worked at the carpenter trade he built-several houses in the community. no nails were used in this construction. every piece was acurately mortised together. These houses stood for many, many years as a monument to his ability, as a builder + mechanic. After a time he sold his first-home and bought a farm 4 miles South of Windsor Henry Co Mo. This was a beautiful location. he build a good house on a hillside at the foot of wh___ ran a ___ly brook overlooking a roling fields meadow and across the road. This was my childhood house. farming and stock raising was carried on by the older boys + By faithful negro man. and my father worked in his well equiped machine shop, making every piece of wagon plows and all kinds of farming implements. He had t________ lathes, forges for making iron posts These implements were the equal (if not superior) of any factory made goods No work left his hand that was not right in every way. Many happy hours have I spent in that work shop helping my Bro John (who inherited his fathers talents) make little wagons sleds and all kinds of toys. These pleasures overbalanced the scoldings we received for dulling my fathers tools and wasting his paint + materials In order to carry on his chosen work and give his children the advantage of better schools he moved to Windsor about the year 1882 for a time he was engaged in the retail furniture busness with his nephew James Ellis. not liking this work he returned to his chosen work as a meshanic. In 1891 he moved with his wife and two youngest children Ella + Robert to Collins St Clair Co Mo. and where his eldest Son (George) wed at that time. being in declining health he soon retired. he passed away at his home March 17-1901 and was laid to rest at Collins Mo. As of 1890, Henry C and Laura Draper were living in Windsor, Henry, MO. Sometime between 1890 and 1900 they moved to Collins, St. Claire, MO, where he passed away 17 Mar 1901. Laura Draper, his wife then moved to Golden City, Barton, MO to live with their daughter Ella Draper Griesel and family. She passed away 15 Mar 1921 and is buried in the IOOF Cemetery in Golden City, MO. Henry enlisted as a Private in Co. E, 7th Missouri State Militia Cavalry (Union Army) at Georgetown, Missouri. He was discharged by order of General Schofield on August 1, 1862. He then joined Co. H, 60th Enrolled Missouri Militia (Union Army). Henry was the father of nine children with Laura including: George, Annie, John, Martha Jane "Mattie," Ella and Robert Draper.
