Ervine, whose death was briefly mentioned in the last issue of the Recorder was the youngest son of Wm. & Frances Ervine, deceased. he was 62 years, 8 months, 11 days old. Leaves one brother, Angus and one sister Miss Rebecca both residing in Highland county, one sister Mary Ann widow of Rev. Jones living in Pennsylvania. The deceased married Miss Margaret C. Leach daughter of the late James & Sallie Leach, who survives him. To them were born two children James W. & Miss Sallie F. who resided at the old homestead. Mr. Ervine's life was such that it deserves more than a passing notice. He was especially noted for his kindness to those in affliction. He would ride for miles to minister to those who were sick and among his neighbors would remain for days & weeks with the afflicted families administering to them. Henry Ervine volunteer in the first company that went out from this county, first under Capt. F.H. Hull and when the company was divided was assigned to Robert Bradshaw's Company, know as Co. B, 31st Virginia. He was a brave and faithful soldier. At camp Bartow he had a gun knocked from his shoulder by a cannon ball. The gun was broken and he was knocked down but not seriously hurt. At Port Republic he was seriously wounded in the thigh & arm which put a stop to his military career. After the war he was elected constable, which positioned he faithfully filled as long as he could have it. He and his two brothers John & Eldridge V., as partners bought the old Ervine homestead. Where they established a home noted for its sobriety and open hospitality. Highland Recorder January 20, 1899 Something Old Henry H. Ervine of the Cowpasture vicinity has in his possession a spectacle case which is at least a century and a quarter old, and during the whole time has been in the Ervine family. Its first owner was Mary Ervine who was born in 1754. From her it came to the hands of her daughter Elizabeth, born in 1776, and she gave it to Francis Ervine from whom it fell to the hands of her husband, Wm. Ervine, who carried it during his lifetime and at his death gave to his son John. After serving him many years it became the property of E. V. Ervine, at whose death it was given to his brother, Henry, who, as stated above now owns it. Staunton Vindicator March 10, 1882 Good Walker On Monday morning last, at 2 o'clock, Mr. H. H. Erwin left Headwaters, in Highland, on foot and walked to Staunton, arriving here at 10 o'clock. He intended to have made the trip back the same day but was detained here by business. The distance is twenty-five miles.
