Layton, one of the early settlers of Cloud county, and one of the oldest residents of this community, died at his home east of town, last Thursday evening, death being caused by heart trouble. Mr. Layton was a Civil War veteran. He was a Kansas pioneer who had weathered the storms of life during the days when Kansas was young and when the Indian and buffalo roamed the prairies. His death marks the passing of one more of the fast diminishing men of the sixties, and brave hearted men who made possible what we have today. Hiram D. Layton was born March 18, 1847, near Jacksonville, Morgan county, Illinois, and died at his home near Jamestown, Kansas, Thursday, June 23, 1921, being 74 years, 3 months and 5 days of age. At the age of 17 he enlisted in the 139 Regiment Illinois Volunteers and served six months during the close of the Civil War. He came to Kansas and settled on the homestead east of town in 1872, which place has been his home up to the time of his death, with the exception of a few months spent on the Pacific coast. He was married to Miss Rosa Tatro in 1874. To this union two children were born, Mrs. Lena Foster and Fred Layton of Concordia. Mrs. Layton died in 1894. He was again married September 1, 1908, to Mrs. Clemintine Chitty. He is survived by his wife, one son, Fred Layton, and daughter, Mrs. Lena Foster; two sisters, Mrs. C.E. Carpenter, of Otego; and Mrs. Jane Kemp, of Iowa; one brother, Wm. Layton, of Concordia. Mr. Layton had been a member of the Odd Fellows lodge, of Jamestown, for over 25 years and was always a strong worker for the order. Funeral services were held at the Fairview church, Sunday afternoon, June 26, conducted by the Rev. T.H. Parrott. Interment was made in the Fairview cemtery.
