Description	:	Hiram enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 24 September 1863 at Camp Holmes. He was mustered as a Private in Company H, 30th North Carolina Infantry. He was wounded and captured near Ft. Slevins, DC on 12 July 1864. He died while a prisoner of war on 3 August in Washington, DC at Lincoln General Hospital of gangrene. He was buried in Washington and exhumed after the war and reinterred at Oakwood Cemetery.
