Description	:	Civil War Veteran Obituary of Hiram Melott Hiram Melott, oldest son of W. F. and Salone Melott, was born March 27,1845 in Bedford County, Pa. He grew up on the farm and did such work as farm boys did in those days. He attended public school until January, 1864 and at the age of 19, enlisted in the Civil War in the 22nd Pa. Read More	Civil War Veteran Obituary of Hiram Melott Hiram Melott, oldest son of W. F. and Salone Melott, was born March 27,1845 in Bedford County, Pa. He grew up on the farm and did such work as farm boys did in those days. He attended public school until January, 1864 and at the age of 19, enlisted in the Civil War in the 22nd Pa. Cavalry Volunteers, with which he serviced until the close of the war, when he was honorably discharged and mustered out July, 1865. In 1870 he was united in marriage with Miss Bequeath. In 1883 they left Pa. and settled in Nebraska, where he worked at the carpenter trade most the time. His wife died in 1910 and in 1912 he came to Iowa to visit his younger brother Francis where he met Amanda Woodin, who was helping care to the Melott family as the wife and mother were very poorly. On December 11, 1912 they were married at Bloomfield, Iowa. He has been heard many times to say: "We never have a word, I enjoy my home, like the place and it has been a happy, prosperous time for me." He departed this life April 5th, 1928 at the age of 82years and 8days. He was a member of the Methodist church and it can truly be said that he was a good man. He has gone to his reward. He has been afflicted for several months and all the time his good wife was right with him and caring for him without a murmur. He did not want anybody else to take care of him and when she was told she could not take care of him any longer and he must be taken away she said never, as long as I am able and can get help. Only One, the Good Lord, can take him away and then I shall know where he is and how is treated. Six months ago his brother came to help take care of him and he has been faithful and patient in his care of him. Hiram leaves a wife, one brother of Cantril, Iowa, besides many nieces and nephews. Services were held at the M.E. church of Cantril, conducted by his pastor, Rev. A.M. Smith, Brother Will Jack and J Hootman sang. Interment was in the Hoskins cemetery. Source: Van Buren Co.
