Mason City Iowa Globe Gazette Tuesday, December 19, 1944: Garner Soldier is War Victim - Garner: Private Homer Dale Young was killed in action in Germany on November 27 according to word received by his family. He was in the infantry of the first army. He was inducted into the army at Camp Dodge January 29, 1944 and took basic training at Camp Fannin, Texas. On July 8th, he returned home for a 10 day furlough with his family, returning to Ft Meade, Maryland from where he left for overseas assignment. He spent 2 months in England, leaving there in October and going through France and Belgium on way to Germany. Homer Dale Young was born in Garner, Hancock, Iowa on July 30, 1913 to parents Homer James Young and Minnie Agnes Carothers. Lived and grew to adulthood in Garner, IA except for a short time at Clear Lake. He attended school at Garner. Married Doris Nonnweiler of Miller on October 7, 1933. They had 3 daughters: Janice, Beverly and Barbara. For a number of years, Dale worked at the Jacob E Decker Plant and of late worked for the Farmers Elevator. Surviving beside his wife and 3 daughters are his parents and sisters: Doris of Mason City and Dorothy at home. From Globe Gazette: March 15, 1945: HONOR SOLDIER WHO GAVE LIFE: A tribute of honor will be paid to Homer Dale Young by this community at the Methodist Church on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. assisted by the American Legion post 256. Received the Purple Heart in 1945 Found in the 1915 census at Clear Lake, Cerro Gordo, IA: Dale, age 1.
