Description	:	James was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania, He married Catharine Montz on 5 October 1828, moving to Cedar County, Iowa about 1853. Catharine died 14 December 1854. James was a Civil War Veteran,,, Iowa 37th Infantry Regiment Company B, "The Greybeards", old men who were supposed to guard Civil War prisoners. He joined at age 59. He was in the war for 2 year, discharged in Galipolis, Ohio, 17 December 1864. He enlisted 8 October 1862. He had two sons that also enlisted, Joshua M. Croghan (2nd Iowa Infantry) and Davis Croghan (35th Iowa Infantry). He was 5'10, had blue eyes, light complected and gray hair. He married Jane Coffey, 9 April 1865. In the 1870 Census, James was listed as a retired farmer, his son Davis was living with him as well as his wife Jane in Rochester, Iowa. Davis Croghan seems to have disappeared after 1871... I cannot find what happened to him, his step-mother, Jane Coffee took control of the family farm, which Davis thought he partly owned.... He just disappeared....James Croghan's daughter Adeline married Virgil Wright (8th Iowa Cavalry) 8 April 1868, they had 4 children, Adaline dying April 1876. I believe she is buried in an unmarked grave in Tipton. Benjamin Franklin Croghan moved to California looking for gold,, and is buried there. Joshua Croghan lived and died in Iowa. Hezekiah also lived and died in Iowa. Rebecca married and moved to Wisconsin and is buried there..... 1854 was a tough year for the family,, James Croghan gained a daughter then lost another daughter and then his wife..... His daughter Rebecca was born in August,, his daughter Elizabeth died in November and his wife Catharine died in December....
