Read More	Private JAMES FRANCIS MILLER, Co. K, 86th Illinois James Francis Miller was one of three children known to have been born to James Miller and Mary Ann (Dukes) Miller. James and Mary Ann were married on May 31, 1840 in Peoria County and at least two children, Hariett and John, were born to the Millers before James passed away on February 25, 1844. In the 1840 census, in Prince's Grove, we find four Heads of Household named Miller. There is Daniel, Christopher, James and John. All have children at the time of the 1840 census except for James. James Miller's earthly remains were laid to rest in the Princeville Township Cemetery in Princeville, Illinois. A son was born to them in 1844, but, the date of his birth is not known at this time, but, it is most likely that at the time of James' passing, Mary Ann was pregnant with that third child, a son, and he was named James after his father when he was born. Miller Died March 23, 1899 Aged 81Y 8M 6D At the time of the 1850 census in Peoria County, we find; Mary A, Miller 32 OH Harriett Miller 9 IL John Miller 7 IL James Miller 6 IL William Dukes 4 IL Jane Dukes 3 IL Henry Dukes 1 IL John Dukes 33 Laborer Ind This census connects the Miller and Dukes family. John is the future Wagoner of Co. K and probably the brother of Mary. Mary Ann and the three children are found residing in Peoria County at the time of the 1850 census along with several members of the Dukes family, including John Dukes and three of his children. John was most likely Mary Ann's brother and he was later to volunteer and serve as Co. K's Wagoner during the Civil War. On Oct. 5, 1859, Harriet J. Miller was married to Henry Adams in Peoria County. At the time of the 1860 census, Henry and Harriet are found residing in Princeville Township and Mary Ann Miller and her sons, John and James are also found residing in Princeville Township not far away. In the 1860 census of Peoria County, there is only one James Miller that fits this information. Mary A. French. On August 27, 1862, French and 95 of his volunteers, including James Miller and his uncle, John Dukes, were mustered into service as Co. K of the 86th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry. French was elected Captain of Co. K. On September 7, 1862, the men of the 86th Illinois marched out of Camp Lyon, through the streets of Peoria, with much fanfare, and boarded a train bound for Camp Joe Holt, in Jeffersonville, Indiana. Two weeks later, the men of the 86th were in the field in Kentucky as part of Col. Daniel McCook's Brigade, chasing the last Confederate troops in Kentucky. On Oct. 8, 1862, the men of McCook's Brigade were engaged with those troops in the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, the 86th Illinois suffering the first of many casualties to come. During the next two years, Private James Miller served faithfully in Co. K as the men of McCook's Brigade served in Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina and North Carolina. During this time, James was witness to and a participant in numerous battles and skirmishes, some of the bloodiest fighting in the Western Theatre of the war, including the Battles of Chicakamauga, Georgia; Resaca, Georgia; Rome, Georgia, Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia; Peach Tree Creek, Georgia; and possibly Jonesboro, Georgia to name a few. I say possibly because it is now known that Private James Miller was mustered out of the service with a disability on January 5, 1865 from an Army Hospital at Quincy, llinois. This disability was most likely an illness as several hundred members of the 86th Illinois were discharged from the 86th because of illnesses during the course of the war. However, it is possible that he was wounded in one of these last battles of 1864 that the men of McCook's Brigade participated in and just escaped being mentioned in any of the records or diaries that I have have seen through the years. In any case, Private James Miller most likely returned at least briefly to Princeville, Illinois. James Miller returned to his life as a civilian and did regain his health. Shortly after the Civil War, James moved west to Clarke County, Iowa, where he was married about 1868 to Juliett Phillips. Juliett was born on July 3, 1850, the daughter of Ichabod S. Phillips and Mary (Watson) Phillips. At least six children are known to have been born to James and Juliett. They are; 1. Mary Jane Miller, born Nov. 21, 1868; died Dec. 22, 1954 2. Henry J. Miller, born June 1872; died Oct. 10, 1873 3. Josephine "Josie" Miller, born c. 1874 4. Warren Miller, born Oct. __, 1876 5. Pearl Francis (son) Miller, born March 8, 1880; died Aug. 22, 1897 6. Fredrick J. Miller, born c. 1885 The Millers are found residing in Fremont Township, Clarke County, Iowa at the time of the 1880 census. In 1887, the surviving members of the 86th Illinois began holding reunions on the anniversary of their mustering in. James attended the 1889 reunion, but that was the last reunion that he attended. At the time of the 1900 census, James and Julia E. are still found in Fremont Township. While he was residing in Clarke County, Iowa, James is believed to have been a member of the Grand Army of the Republic Post 173 in Osceola, Clarke County, Iowa. In the 1910 census, James and Juliett are found residing in Ward 1 of Des Moines, Iowa in Polk County. Private James Francis Miller died in 1919, probably in Des Moines, Iowa, but his earthly remains were sent back to Clarke County, where they were laid to rest in the Liberty Cemetery. Juliett is still found residing in Ward 1 of Des Moines, Iowa in 1920. She is listed as a Widow at that time. Juliett died in 1936, but, at this time, it is not known whether he died in Des Moines, Iowa or not. When she died, her earthly remains were laid to rest beside those of her husband of more than 50 years in the Liberty Cemetery in Clarke County, Iowa. By Baxter B.
