Description	:	James Henry Steptoe Stratton was born at Kanawha Salines, Kanawha County, W. Va. on June 12, 1840. He was the son of Joseph Dickinson Stratton and Mary Ann Buster. James grew to manhood in Kanawha County and for 25 years was a steamboat clerk and captain on the Ohio River and its tributaries. On May 8, 1861, he enlisted in Company H, Virginia 22nd Infantry Regiment. He served first as QM Sgt., 60th Va. Inf. Regt. He transferred to Company A, Virginia 26th Cavalry Regiment on Feb. 2, 1865. He was in the battles at Tuckwiller Hill and Gordonsville, among others. On Dec. 9, 1868, at age 28, he married Mary Anna "Annie" Nelson Handley (1846-1906) near Lewisburg, Greenbrier County, W. Va. She was the daughter of Harvey and Mary Caroline Lockhart Bell Handley. They had seven children: Joseph Harvey (1869-1899); Mary Theresa (Polly)(1872-1946); Carrie Bell (1875-1931); John Handley (1878-1961); Henry Nelson (1882-1884); Willie Thomas (1884-1981); and James Marion (1887-1970). Following the civil war, the family moved to Lewisburg October 1878, taking charge of the Lewisburg Hotel, which James owned and managed until his death Feb. 3, 1895. It was said that the hotel was "the best property of its kind in this part of the state, with the exception of that at White Sulphur Springs." In 1879, James was elected trustee of the town of Lewisburg, and by subsequent reelections, served two suceeding terms.
