In 1860 census he resided in Tucker County WV with his parents and brother Washington Carr. Joab married Sarah Catharine White (1848 – 1912) on 27 Apr 1865 in Tucker County, WV. Sometime after1880 census, they migrated to Crag, Greenbrier County WV and took up farming on the Carr Summerfield Road. Parents of: Mrs. Virginia Catharine Carr Heater (1866 – 1887) wife of James A. Heater (1855 – ?), Albert H. Carr (1868 – 1947), Sylvester J. Carr (1870 - 1932), James B. Carr (1873 - ?), Joseph C. Carr (1874 - ?), Sarah Elizabeth "Lizzie" Carr (1875 - 1930), Mary Alice Carr (1876 - 1933), Alpheus Calvin Carr (1879 – 1965), Mollie M. Carr (1883 - 1939), and Arthur A. Carr (1883 - 1926). Cause of death: chronic nephritis. Note: On the same 1860 Tucker County census page is another but older Joab Carr (1824 - 1903) married to Lucretia Bright Carr (1827 - 1903). Mrs. Virginia Catharine Carr Heater, who was born in Red Creek and died at the age of twenty-one (21) years in 1877, is buried in the Carr Cemetery in Parsons, Tucker County WV. Joab transferred the farm to his sons Albert and Alpheus, however; Alpheus worked in the mines and farmed as well.
