Highland Recorder June 2, 1911 ANOTHER GOOD MAN GONE Having rounded out man's allotted time on earth, Mr. John E. Sipe, a well-known citizen, passed to his final reward on Friday morning, May 26, at his home in the county jail building in Monterey. Mr. Sipe was a native of Rockingham county, born in 1830, but came to Highland in early life, married here, and, with the the exception of 16 years, spent all his days in this county. Although four score years of age he remained quite vigorous until very recent years, and led an active life. The illness which terminated in his death lasted but a few days, and for many hours preceding death he was unconscious. Mr. Sipe was a good man, kind of heart, even tempered, and had perhaps as many warm friends as any man who ever lived in the county. He had been a member of the Methodist church for something like sixteen years, was faithful in his attendance upon the public services and liberal in his support of the ministry. Mr. Sipe was a Confederate veteran, having served in the 14th Virginia Cavalry, and he had a war record of which no private need be ashamed. He had planned to attend the re-union now going on at Philippi, W. Va., and had arranged to start on the day on which his funeral took place. He is survived by his aged widow and five children. There are two sons - Messers. Tom Sipe, of near Monterey, and John Sipe, of Huttonsville. The daughters are Mesdames H. H. Pullin, of Monterey, J. 0. Hiner, of Marlinton, and Ella Fenton, of California. The funeral services took place from the Methodist church on Saturday morning, Rev. L. L. Lowance, his pastor, conducting the same, and the following gentlemen acting as pall-bearers: Active, Don Sullenberger, C. W. Trimble, J. S. Gibson, Dan Ralston, J L. Hiner and C. T. Shumate, The following resident Confederate veterans acted as honorary pallbearers, and marched in a body to the cemetery: J. Lunsford, C. P. Jones, L. A. Carichoff, John W. Bird, 0. Wilson, W. A. Beverage, 0. J. Hiner, W. A. Cunningham. N. A. Whitelaw, Geo. A. Smith, Philip Helmick, Joseph Jones, John K.Johnson and F. M. Trimble. At the close of the burial service at the grave these old comrades, some of them tottering and feeble, marched by the open grave and deposited a sprig of evergreen as a token of their affection and esteem. All his children except Mrs. Fenton were present at the time of his death.
