Pastor St.; Patrick's church, Natick County and State: Middlesex Co. Mass" John HOEY, Jr. ran off to the Civil War, lying about his age to join up. He wanted to rejoin his father there. His unit was Company M, of the First Conn Cavalry. His father John Hoey,Sr. was a POW during and died at the end of the Civil War. (By the 1870s John Sr's three oldest sons were in Massachusetts and prospering.) John HOEY Jr. settled on "Cat Hill" in Natick, a traditional neighborhood of the Hoey family, where he had a farm at 25-29 Reynolds Avenue. (Matthew HOEY's daughter Sarah CALDWELL, and his great grandson Joseph SULLIVAN, later also lived on Reynolds Ave. homesite) John HOEY Jr. died in 1903 when he was struck by a train walking home along the tracks from South Framingham after a show. His gravestone in St. Patrick's Cemetery is marked: "John Hoey Co. M 1st CT CAV". John's daughter Mary Agnes CHAMPNEY raised a family of six daughters and a son at the family homestead and many of his descendants remain in the Natick area today.
