He was about 72 years of age and had been visiting his son here for some time. He had been ailing for the past three weeks. The funeral will be held from the George Hammett home, 807 Tremont street, on Saturday afternoon. ------------------------------------- Le Mars Semi Weekly Sentinel Tuesday, July 11, 1911 Funeral of John Hammett The funeral of John Hammett, father of George Hammett, of this city, was held on Saturday from the residence, 807 Tremont street, conducted by Rev. W. E. Blackstock. Mr. Hammett had come here from Lowell, Kansas, a few days ago. He was a native of Truro, England, where he was born July 5, 1833. When a boy he came with his parents to Quebec. Later they moved to Lafayette county, Wis. In 1856 he was married to Mary McLaughlin, of Dubuque. Two sons were born of this union, George and John, the latter dying in youth. His wife died in 1860. John Hemmett was a veteran of the Civil War, serving in the Forty-Fifth Illinois regiment. After the war, he located in Kansas at Lowell and married a second time. Two sons and two daughters were born of this marriage, who live in Kansas with their mother. He had suffered from kidney trouble for a long time and the physician at Lowell recommended a change of climate. George Hammett went to Lowell to bring his father to Iowa and they arrived home Monday of last week. On Thursday, he was taken critically ill and died on Thursday morning.
