From the October 31, 1918 Skidmore News, page 1: "John Kuntzman Dead Another Monroe township home was made sad Monday afternoon when a message telling of the death of John Kuntzman was received here. John was the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. George Kuntzman, living about seven miles southwest of Skidmore, and was called into the service of his country on May 25, this year, going with the contingent that left Maryville on that date for training at Camp Dodge, Iowa, where he remained until sometime in July when he was transferred to an eastern camp from which he sailed on August 15th for his final training in France. He was born in Holt county, December 25th, 1895 and only a few years ago moved with the family to their present home. On October 3rd, he passed away at a camp "over there," aged 22 years 11 months, 8 days, following an illness of pneumonia." From the June 2, 1921 Skidmore News, page 1: "John Ray Kuntzman, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Kuntzman, was born in Holt county, Missouri, December 25th, 1894, and died in France October 3, 1918. He lived in Holt county until 1913, when he moved with his parents to Nodaway county. He attended school at harmony and Minnesota Valley, and later took a correspondence course in C. A. Coey's school of motoring in Chicago, Ill. He was a member in good standing of the Mound City Woodmen of the World, and had been for ten years. When his services were needed by his country, he went. He left here May 24th for Camp Dodge and left there with company M, 351 Infantry, 88th division, August 7th for Camp Mills. He later sailed for France and died there October 3rd from pneumonia. John grew to manhood here among his friends and neighbors and was an honest upright young man, always doing good where he could. He was a great comfort and help to his parents. All his neighbors were his friends. He made the supreme sacrifice. He leaves to mourn his loss his father, mother, and one brother, David and a host of relatives and friends. Card of Thanks We desire to express our deepest gratitude to those who so kindly assisted at the funeral of our dear son and brother, and particularly for the floral offerings and the music.
