Highland Recorder January 26, 1917 Aged Citizen Dead John R. Beverage, probably the oldest citizen of Highland, died Sunday afternoon at the old home on Strait Creek. In spite of his extreme age 94 years and his feeble condition, death came unexpectedly, giving even the members of the family but short notice of its approach. Mr. Beverage was a farmer and most of his life was spent in the home were the grim reaper found him, a fully-ripened sheaf awaiting the harvest. He was one of the county's good citizens quiet, peaceable and law abiding. If he had an enemy in the world, the writer does not know it, for he was kind and friendly in every relation of life. He was a veteran of the war and in speaking of his record, one of his comrades classed him as "a good soldier." Although a widower at the time of his death, Mr. Beverage was thrice married, his consorts being Misses Moyers, Ralston and Malcomb, in the order named. The children of the first union are S.N. Beverage, of Monterey, and Mrs. J.B. Hicklin, of the Bullpasture; those of the second, William Beverage and Mrs. J.W. Botkin, both living in the West, while Olen and Morgan, at home, and Berlin in Detroit, are children of the third marriage. There is also one surviving brother, Andrew J. Beverage, of Pendleton, who was unable to be present at the funeral on account of illness. Mr. Beverage was a member of the church of the Brethren. The funeral service was held at the home Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J.C. Thrasher, of the Methodist church. Interment in Strait Creek cemetery. Highland Recorder March 26, 1915 Strait Creek News Uncle John R. Beverage celebrated his ninety-second birthday Saturday with forty-seven of his relatives and friends present.
