John Rand married (2) Mary A. McKenna 5 November 1887 in Essex, Middlesex Co., Connecticut. John W. Rand enlisted as a Private in Co. K. 11th Regiment Connecticut Volunteer Infantry on 14 November 1861 in Hartford, Connecticut. He was discharged for disability 22 October 1862. Enlistment Description Age: 37 Height: 5' 10 " Complexion: Dark Hair: Dark Eyes: Hazel He applied for a Civil War Invalid Pension that was granted under Certificate No. 198837. His application stated that he injured his back carrying ball cartridges to the front at the battle of New Berne, North Carolina. Military records indicate that John Rand was brought to the hospital at Beaufort, North Carolina 23 June 1862 and was hospitalized through at least the and of August. Several soldiers that served with John Rand in the 11th C.V.I., including his brother, Henry A. Rand, completed affidavits attesting to the chills, fever and rheumatism suffered by him before his hospitalization. John Rand is the grandson of Prentis Crossley, a person of color, who was a slave that served in the Revolutionary War and was granted his freedom.
