BIRTH: He was under age 16 in 1790 and 10-16 in 1800 census. Joseph was born 1785 according to 1850 and 1777 per 1860 census. In 1830 and 1840 censuses Richard had a male of same age living with him, probably Joseph who later married his wife. APPRENTICESHIP: George Barnhouse apprentices his son Joseph Barnhouse about age 15 in 1802 to learn trade of shoemaking: Jan 1 1802 George Barnhouse of St. Mary's Co MD doth place and lend his son Joseph Barnhouse now age 15 years or thereabouts as an apprentice to the said William Dorsey (Downey) to learn the trade and mystery of shoemaker and Joseph shall serve for the full term of six years and the end of the apprenticeship to give said Joseph one fine hall, two shirts, Vcoal waiscoat & breeches of broad cloth, a pare of stockings, one pare of shores, one silk hankercheif, twenty dollars in cash and one set shoremakers tools and during his said apprenticeship in good and sufficient working cloths, mule drink washing and lodging and louse his best endeavor to learn the said apprentice the art and mystery of cordwaining subject to apprentice law of 1793 in same manner if entered into before the Orphans Court of aforesaid county. Luckett of the 1st Regiment of US Dragoons 160 acres of land Feb 17th 1852 Joseph Barnhouse Capt Nelson Lucket's 1st Regt of US Light Dragoons Applied Aug 11 1854, rejected initially for lack of proofs. Joseph enlisted as private of Capt Luckett's Co Lt Dragoons enlisted June 18, 1812 for 5 years and Lt. Birch's Detachment of Lt. Dragoons to April 30 1815 not found afterwards. The evidence of his disability does not appear on the records Dec 8 1851 Ed Manby Appt Adj Gen. Letter Dec 5 1851 says Joseph Barnhouse private in Capt Nelson Lucketts Comp First Dragoons enlisted for 5 years on 18th of June 1812. He has been traced on the rolls of the above company from the date of enlisted to the 1st day of January 1813 without finding evidence of the disability. His discharge in Nov 1815 will probably be found in the office of the Second Auditor. by John B. Gallaher Auditor. March 31 1853 Surgeon's Affidavit Joseph Barnhouse a private in the company of Capt. Nelson Luckett in the 1st Regiment of US Light Dragoons that in Nov 1813 in charging the enemy near Crister Fields in Lower Canada he received a wound from a musket ball in his left knee fracturing the bone and at the battle of Lundy's lane recd a wound on the left side of the head, fracturing his skull and in falling over a British Gun carriage recd considerable injury in his left hip, these injuries left him lame and produce frequent headaches. Affidavit of Joseph dated Dec 4 1851 states he enlisted 18th day of June 1812 in the 1st Comp of US Dragoons commanded by Capt. Nelson Lucket, 1st Regt commanded by Col. Covington, for the term of Five Years at Baltimore MD marched from thence to Carlisle PA thence to Sackites Harbor, NY was in the battle of Sacketts Harbor and in the Battle of Cristlers Fields and while on a charge in the latter was wounded in the knee by a musket ball, Col. Covington being mortally wounded, Col. Walback advanced the command from thence marched to Sackett's Harbor from thence to Buffalo, thence for Fort Erie and Chippewa Plains and finally to Government Island, where he was discharged on Surgeon's certificate of disability on the 3rd day of Sep 1815. That he received an honorable discharge which he left in the care of a friend by the name of Dorsey and not thinking he should ever have use for it, neglected to get it again, And that Dorsey is long since deceased.
