Wood Regiment Name: 2 Battalion North Carolina Infantry Side: Confederate Company: B Soldier's Rank In: Private Soldier's Rank Out: Private Film Number M230 roll 43 2nd Infantry Battalion was formed at Garysburg, North Carolina, during the fall of 1861. Five companies were from Madison, Stokes, Randolph, Surry, and Forsyth counties, one from Mecklenburg County, Virginia, and two from Pike and Meriwether counties, Georgia. The Virginia company was transferred in September, 1862, and the Georgia commands in mid-1863. It was sent to the coast and captured in the Battle of Roanoke Island. After being exchanged it was assigned to General Daniel's and Grimes' Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. It served from Gettysburg to Cold Harbor, fought in the Shenandoah Valley with Early, and was active around Appomattox. It lost 3 killed and 5 wounded at Roanoke Island and of the 240 engaged at Gettysburg, sixty-four percent were disabled. The battalion surrendered with 3 officers and 49 men. The field officers were Lieutenant Colonels Hezekiah L. Andrews, Wharton J. Green, and Charles E. Shober; and Majors Marcus Erwin, John M. Hancock, and James J. Iredell. Lee fought in the same Battalion as Enoch Corder and William Bowles, Jr. They all married cousins. Lee volunteered 10 August 1861 in Dobson, as a Private in Company "B", Second Battalion, North Carolina Troops, and marched with the company in Danville, Pittsylvania County, Virginia, where they boarded a train for Richmond. He was taken prisioner by the enemy 8 February 1862, and was parolled at Elizabeth City, North Carolina, 21 February 1862. He stayed at home until the company reorgainzed in August, 1862. He was active until taken prisioner again on 14 July 1864, at Washington,DC. He was confined at Elimira, New York, until parolled 30 July 1865. He came home and became a miller in Rockford Township. He did apply for pension, but there is no record of him receiving it.
