His only other child was Lura. ∼Source: Foster County Independent Published: August 2, 1928 VETERAN OF CIVIL WAR DIES AT AGE 81 AT GRACE CITY Lewis Whitman Expired After Long Life - Funeral To Be Held Today ENLISTED WITH IOWA REGIMENT AT AGE 18 Participated in Battle of Gettysburg and Other Noted Battles of War "Taps" sounded for another Civil war Veteran in Foster County when Lewis Whitman, 81, died at Grace City Monday evening. A country boy of 18, Mr. Whitman joined the army in the last year of fighting, going through the battle of Gettysburg, several skirmishes and raids and witnessing the dramatic surrender of General Lee at the Appomattox courthouse. Two fellow veterans of the Civil war, John Conolly Sr., of Carrington and George Trembley of Grace City, will attend the funeral rites at the Grace City Methodist church at 2:30 this afternoon. A private service will be held at the farm home of his daughter, Mrs. G. C. Stedman, at 2 o'clock and interment made in the Grace City cemetery. An attack of pneumonia that followed the flu two months ago broke down the health of the aged veteran. Gradually weakening, his death has been expected for several weeks. HERE FOR 18 YEARS Born in Wisconsin in 1847, Mr. Whitman left his home at 18 to fight in the war, putting in most of his service under General Andrews. He was never wounded although he took part in several heavy battles. Married shortly afterward, his wife and a little son and daughter died within a month of each other with typhoid fever. Another child, a four-year-old girl, was burned to death in a fire accident. His only other child, now Mrs. Lura Stedman of Grace City, survives him. His second wife lives at Burnham, Wis. Working as a laborer after leaving the army, Mr. Whitman retired about 18 years ago and moved to Grace City. He lived in town for several years but spent the last few years of his life with his daughter. Mr. Conolly and Mr. Trembley, the only other Civil war veterans in Foster County, were his best friends. Knowing that death was approaching he asked to have both attend his funeral, asked for a flag draped coffin without flowers and a simple, quiet funeral service. **************************************************** Lewis Whitman's first wife, Sarah Jeanette Whitman, a small son, and a daughter, died within a month of each other of typhoid fever.
