Description	:	He served in the U. S. Military during World War I. He was a Private assigned to the 309th Infantry, 78th Infantry Division (Lightning). This unit was transported to France in May and June 1918. In France, during the summer and fall of 1918, it was the "point of the wedge" of the final offensive which knocked out Germany. The 78th was in three major campaigns during World War I – Meuse-Argonne, St. Mihiel, and Lorraine. Grand Island (Nebraska) Independent Monday, 20 October 1947 Luther Hugh Soper, 56, a resident of Grand Island for the past 17 years, died early this morning at his home, 2015 North Huston, after an illness of two weeks. Mr. Soper was born Feb. 12, 1891, at Madison, S. D., to Franklin and Cassey Soper. He married the former Isabel Van Vieck at Omaha on June 4, 1927. He was a member of the Presbyterian church. During the First World War he served overseas and was a member of the American Legion for over 25 years. He also held a membership in the Grand Island Council of the United Commercial Travelers. Surviviors include his wife; two sisters, Mrs. J. G. Sager, Sioux Falls, S. D., and Mrs. Maude Wagner, College Park, Md., and other relatives. His parents and one brother preceded him in death. Funeral services and burial will be held in Neligh.
