Nathaniel was the son of Thomas Floyd McVay and Pharney Euphremia (Jenkins) McVay. His mother died when he was seven, and when he was young, he went to live with his mother's family. Nathaniel was married five times. He had children with only one of his wives - Sarah Jane (Moore) McVay (1840-1873), his first wife. Sarah and Nathaniel were married on September 15, 1859 in Poweshiek County, Iowa. He had eight children with Sarah: William, Maude, Freddie, Charles, William, Jeddie, Belle and Genevieve "Jennie" McVay. Sarah died at age 33, in February 1873. (Please note: I believe that Sarah was actually born about 1835 or 1836. Her children, Belle and Genevieve, were listed as being the nieces of Nicholas Howard Moore (born 1820) who was the son of Nicholas Moore and Sarah Downing. I believe Sarah Jane (Moore) McVay may have been the youngest child of Nicholas Moore and the 1860 census lists her as being born about 1835.) On October 1, 1873, in Poweshiek County, Iowa, Nathaniel married his second wife, Isabelle (Brees) McVay Van Bogart (1853-1928). Isabelle and Nathaniel were divorced before April 1876. On April 11, 1876, Nathaniel married his third wife, Eliza Jane (Farmer) Hayter Lantz McVay (1839-1897)in Union Township, Poweshiek, Iowa. Eliza would be his wife for twenty one years. She had been a widow to two other Civil War veterans and had had four children before she married Nathaniel. After Eliza died in 1897, Nathaniel then married his fourth wife, Nancy Jane (Wilson) Semelroth McVay (1845-1909) in about 1898. They were married less than four years and then got divorced. Finally, in 1904, Nathaniel married his fifth wife, Eliza Ellen (Little) Henning McVay (1844-1918). They were married for fourteen years.
