Norman Ceyland Johnson was the son of Alfred and Inga Berdelia Johnson. Norman had four siblings, three brothers and one sister; their names were George, Raymond, Richard, and Beatrice Preszler. Norman spent most of his life in Bison; he attended Bison grade school and some high school. Norman Johnson was employed as a ranch hand. He enjoyed riding horses and roller-skating. Norman Johnson was described as tall, blonde, and good-natured. Norman called for his army examination on January 31, 1944 and was inducted into the Marines on February 26, 1944. He began training with the U.S. Marines in San Diego, California and had been transferred to Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, California after basic training. Norman held the rank of Marine Private. On June 17, 1944, Pvt. Norman Johnson died at Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, California, he died as a result of a gunshot wound to the left chest while on maneuvers. Pvt. Johnson's body was brought back to Lemmon, South Dakota to be prepared for burial, his funeral and burial were in Bison, South Dakota. The funeral was a public funeral at the Auditorium, which was attended by hundreds of friends of the family. Norman was preceded in death his mother, Inga Berdelia Johnson; his three brothers, George, Richard, and Raymond; and his one sister, Beatrice Preszler. Norman's two brothers, Richard and George, left him with one nephew, Jerry Johnson; and three nieces, Darlys Preszler, Deb Johnson, and Dorwyn Johnson.
