Description	:	He was born on the Mexico Plantation in what is now Hampton County, South Carolina. His father owned two plantations, one of which used ninety-eight slaves in 1860. Graduated with Distinction from The South Carolina Military School, now known as The Citadel. Ranked 7th of 15; class orator. He continued his studies at what is now The University of South Carolina and passed the bar in November of 1860. Enlisted 4/8/1861 at Morris's Island, near Columbia, SC., he traveled 120 miles to be mustered into "C" Co. SC 2nd Infantry as a Private at Camp Davis, near Richmond, Va. on 5/21/1861. 5/21/1861 Appointed 4th Corporal. 6/4/1861 Promoted to 3rd Corporal. Between 6/30/1861 - 12/31/1861 Promoted to 5th Sergeant. Between 2/3/1862 - 5/1/1862 Promoted to 4th Sergeant. Between 8/1/1862 - 11/1/1862 Promoted to 2nd Sergeant for courage at Savage's Station, June 29, 1862, and at Malvern Hill, July 1, 1862; acted as Company Commander for the next seven months. Between 11/5/1862 - 1/1/1863 Promoted to 1st Sergeant. Absent, sick, Winter of 1862-1863; returned Spring 1863. Between 2/28/1863 - 6/3/1863 Promoted to 3rd Lieutenant. 6/3/1863 Promoted to 2nd Lieutenant. 7/3/1863 Promoted to 1st Lieutenant. Youmans and others who had a military background tended to be harsh disciplinarians. Likely for this reason, he was unpopular among the men of his company. 3/18/1864 Resigned Commission due to his unpopularity when his enlistment was ending: many of his company's troops' enlistments were to expire and the troops were not inclined to re-enlist if Youmans were to re-enlist with a promotion to Captain and remain Company Commander. Re-enlistments were most crucial at this time of the war. Re-enlisted 4/8/1864 as a private; remained with unit. Killed In Action in the Battle of The Wilderness, Va. His father, William Youmans, filed a Settlement Claim for $250.83 on 6/1/1864. A friend characterized Youmans as "a victim to his unshrinking courage" who had been "intellectual, truthful, conscientious, and pure; a high toned gentleman, a gallant soldier, a devoted patriot, and a consistent Christian." Buried on the field, he had "amid strange faces and from strange hands, received the rude burial of the soldier in soil now in lines of the hated foe." The 2nd Infantry Regiment {also called 2nd Palmetto Regiment} completed its organization near Richmond, Virginia, in May, 1861. The men were from Columbia, Camden, and Charleston, and the counties of Sumter, Richland, Greenville, Kershaw, and Lancaster.
