Born in Ireland on Dec 11th 1841,he came to this country at the age of nine years with his parents,Francis and Mary O'Neill,who settled at St. George. He was one of the few remaining veterans of the American Civil War,and bore the scar of a wound in the theigh,received in action.He had been in failing health for some years and like most old people he lived in the past,and his memory of scenes and events of the civil war and the old lumbering and river driving days was wonderful. He was an active newpaper reader up until an week before he died. Fourty-eight years ago he married Miss Harriet Ames of Bangor,ME.,who servives him. His family numbered six boys and four girls. One boy,Owen,was killed by a train in New Hampshire twenty years ago and a girl died in infancy. The remaineder of the family are: Thomas,Arthur,Frank,and Mrs Edwd Lord who reside in Sorrol Ridge, Mrs. Charles Marsh,Eddie and John who live in Revere,MA,and Mrs Joseph Brenan of Richmond,ME.The only other living relitives are a sister,Mrs.Rose McShane of Revere,MA.,and a cousin,James O'Neill of St. George........... ME 1st Heavy Artillery He was Absent, wounded on 9/1/1866 (Date of enlistment unknown. Absent at MO of Regt) He was listed as: * POW 10/27/1864 Boydton Plank Road, VA * Wounded 10/27/1864 Boydton Plank Road, VA * Paroled 2/18/1865 (place not stated) After the War he lived in Pleasant Ridge, New Brunswick. - Report of the Adjutant General of the State of Maine - First Maine Heavy Artillery: A History Contributor: Larry Burden (∼Served in Co.
