Roney was one of at least three children born to Peter Roney Sr. and Bridget R. (Crombey) Roney. The other known children were his brother, Hugh Roney, and his sister, Ellen (Roney) Murdoch. The Roneys came to America in 1848, when Peter was about 8 years of age. They are believed to have come to Peoria County after the 1860 census, but before 1862. In August of 1862, Peter and Hugh are both residents of Princeville Township in Peoria County. It was there in Princeville Township that on August 8, 1862 Hugh Roney Volunteered for service in a company that was being raised by a local school teacher by the name of John F. French. The following day, Peter R. Roney also volunteered. There at Camp Lyon on August 27, 1862, 98 of those recruits, including Hugh and Peter, were mustered into service as Co. K of the 86th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry. John French was elected Captain of Co. K. The men of the 86th Illinois marched out of Camp Lyon on September 7, 1862 through the streets of Peoria down to the railroad depot and the war. During the next two years, Peter and Hugh served faithfully in the Princeville company. They participated in numerous battles including Perryville, Kentucky; Chickamauga, Georgia; Resaca, Georgia; and Rome, Georgia but it was on June 27, 1864 at Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia that the 86th suffered the most. On that fateful day, the 86th was in the center of McCook's Brigade when it made the assault on Cheatham Hill at a point in the line that became known as the "Dead Angle." The morning of the assualt, the 86th field about 400 men fit for duty to make the assualt. During this 30 minute assualt, over 100 men from the 86th Illinois were either killed, wounded or captured. McCook's Brigade, which field about 2,000 men that morning suffered over 500 casualties in the 30 minute assualt. Eight men from Co. K were among the casualties. Both Peter and Hugh were wounded. Both Peter and Hugh were to spend many months in Army Hospitals, first in Chattanooga and Nashville and then probably in Springfield, Illinois. Peter was discharged first on January 23, 1865, though it is not certain at this time where he was discharged. Hugh was discharged from the Army Hospital in Springfield, Illinois on May 12, 1865. Both then initially returned to their homes in Princeville. After he returned from the service, Peter was married to Ann Maria Lambert in Peoria County on June 24, 1865. She was either widowed or divorced. Ann Scott was married to Charles W. Lambert on December 29, 1853 in Peoria County and they had two children. 1. Elizabeth Lambert, born c. 1856 2. Charles Lambert, born c. 1859 The Lamberts are found in the 1860 census of Peoria in Princeville Township. By 1865, when Peter and Ann were married, Charles had either died or the Lamberts had divorced. At the time of the 1870 census, Peter and Maria are found still residing in Princeville Township. At that time the Lambert children are residing in the household, though their names are now listed as Roney, and Peter and Maria's first child, Henry A. is listed. At least two children are believed to have been born to them. 1. Henry A. Roney, born c. 1865. 2. Ettie Roney, born c. 1872 Sometime between 1872 and 1880, Peter moved to Missouri, where he settled in Nodaway Township in Nodaway County, Missouri, just north of Quitman, Missouri. Peter is found in Nodaway Township, Nodaway County, Missouri at the time of the 1880 census. His name is spelled Rooney in the census. He is listed as widowed, so we know that Ann has passed. Peter is farming. His parents are listed as having been born in Ireland; Peter Rooney Self M 40 Scotland Henry Rooney Son M 15 Illinois Ettie Rooney Daughter F 8 Illinois Peter was married 2nd to Mary Clarke Emerson in the early 1880's. Mary was born on October __, 1843 at __________, __________, the daughter of William S. Emerson and Mary (Funderburk) Emerson. Mary had been previously married to Sam P. Jones, but he had died sometime before 1880 leaving Mary as a Widow. She is found in the 1880 census of Nodaway County, Missouri. Three children are believed to have been born to Peter and Mary. They are; 3. Daisy Roney, born March __, 1884. 4. Peter H. Barney Roney, born Feb 8, 1887; died July 16, 1887. 5. Charles Ransom Roney, born August __, 1888; died on __________ __, 1980; buried in the Quitman Cemetery. Peter and Mary lived out the rest of their lives there in Nodaway County. Private Peter R. Roney died on January 2, 1896 and his earthly remains were laid to rest in the Quitman Cemetery in Quitman, Missouri. Mary C. Roney is found residing in the village of Quitman, Green Township, Nodaway County, Missouri at the time of the 1900 census. She is widowed, the mother of 12 children, eight of whom are still living at this time; Mary C Roney Head F 57 Missouri Daisy Roney Daughter F 16 Missouri Charley Roney Son M 12 Missouri Mary outlived her 2nd husband by 37 years, passing away in 1933. Her earthly remains were laid to rest beside those of Private Peter R. Roney. by Baxter B.
