Entombment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens, with military rites by Roy S. Hickman American Legion Post No. 78. Reuben died Sunday, May 30, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital. Visitation will be from 1-5pm, Wednesday June 2, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, and an hour prior to the funeral service. Reuben Kappes was born October 21, 1930 at Ashley, ND to Adam & Katherine (Gross) Kappes. He was raised on a farm near Long Lake SD, and in 1953 married Verna Kramer on April 12 at Ashley ND. They farmed the original family homestead and raised cattle, grain and horses until 1971 when they moved to Leola. In 1963, Reuben began his extensive auctioneering career. He auctioned land parcels, farms, estates, personal property and real estate. He was active as a Real Estate Broker and Appraiser. Reuben and Verna moved to Aberdeen in 2001, where he semi-retired, but continued to dabble in rental contracting and working at Lincoln Futures. Reuben was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and the Leola American Legion. He was past commander of Adolph Schumacher Legion Post of Long Lake and a Leola City Council member. Reuben was instrumental in bringing grants and donations of money to Leola for the construction of the Leola Municipal building, Medical building/library and swimming pool. Reuben was also known for sharing his auctioneering talents with McPherson County 4H and was recognized for 25 years of service. He enjoyed spending time with his friends and family, hosting and organizing social gatherings. He was active in the Republican Party in the McPherson County. Reuben loved all animals and especially children. Pallbearers will include Dennis Kappes, Jerome Kappes, Tom Kappes, Ron Kappes, Neal Nelson and Robert "Bobby" Hatten. Honorary Casket Bearers will be Bill Stolle, Jim Goebel, Charles Hoffman, Leon Crawford and Larry Pharris. Grateful for having shared Reuben's life are his wife Verna, Aberdeen, and daughter Stacey Kappes, Maplewood MN, Sisters Lila Rau, Leola SD, Delores Kumpf, Aberdeen SD, Francis (Marvin) Lehr, Ashley ND, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his son Scott Reuben Kappes, parents and brother, Raymond.
