He returned to Iowa in 1942 and lived with his cousin Stuart Hatzky in Nashua until drafted into the US Army for World War II. He enlisted at Camp Dodge, Iowa on January 15, 1943. He was sent overseas in September 1943, serving in India and Burma as a member of the 5307th Composite Unit, in the medical detachment of the 3rd Battalion.
