Description	:	RUSSELL WHITNEY KIDDER, at twenty-nine years of age enlisted, 14 Aug. 1862, to serve in the 38th IOWA INFANTRY, Company C, as a private. Russell Kidder was mustered in 4 Nov. 1862. He transferred to the 34th IOWA INFANTRY, Company I, and gave his residence as Fredericksburg, IA and nativity as VT. This regiment served in the following; siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi, June to July 1863; expedition to Yazoo City, Mississippi, 12 to 21 July 1863; siege and capture of Fort Morgan, Alabama 9 to 23 Aug. 1863; consolidated with the 34th Iowa Infantry, 12 Dec.... Russell Kidder was mustered out, 1 Jan. 1865. This unit lost 2 men killed in action and 315 men died of disease for a total of 317 men. Civil War Veteran; Co C 38th Iowa Infantry; "The Martyr Regiment"; Co I 34th/38th Iowa Infantry The 38th Iowa was nicknamed the Martyr Regiment because over a third of its number died of disease in Louisiana & Mississippi in the latter months of 1863 shortly after the Siege of Vicksburg.Others were discharged disabled and died on the trip home or soon after. There were so few able bodied men left that the 38th Iowa was combined with the 34th Iowa Infantry.
