Age 19, Residence Highland,IA nativity New York. Enlisted Aug. 15,1862. Mustered Sept. 6, 1862. Died of disease Sept. 26, 1863, Highland, Iowa. --------- In July-September of 1863 the 38th Iowa was involved in the Siege of Vicksburg. During August and September almost 100% of the soldiers in the 38th Iowa were ill with typhoid and malaria due to encampment near swampy area near Port Hudson,LA. The commanding officer died and approx. a third of the over 1000 soldiers in the regiment either died or were discharged as disabled. Many of the disabled either died on the way home on hospital ships or died after they got home.
