Description	:	In April of 1861, the 7th Virginia Cavalry was formed including many men from Page County. William joined company D(Jordan’s Company) most likely in April of 1862, when he was 18, the same time as his older brother David. His enlistment papers describe him as standing 5ft 9in tall, having a dark complexion, and having grey eyes and auburn hair. The 7th Virginia Cavalry served under the command of General Jeb Stuart, and saw major action during the war, including at Gettysburg and at the Battle of Brandy Station. William and his brother David served through the end... Read More	In April of 1861, the 7th Virginia Cavalry was formed including many men from Page County. William joined company D(Jordan’s Company) most likely in April of 1862, when he was 18, the same time as his older brother David. His enlistment papers describe him as standing 5ft 9in tall, having a dark complexion, and having grey eyes and auburn hair. The 7th Virginia Cavalry served under the command of General Jeb Stuart, and saw major action during the war, including at Gettysburg and at the Battle of Brandy Station. William and his brother David served through the end of the war. Most of the Confederate Army including some of their regiment surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865. However William and David were able to escape with most of their unit back up to Northern Virginia. They surrendered at Winchester Virginia, on June 1, 1865. They were among the last of their regiment to do so. After the war, William returned to the family farm in Luray, Virginia. He married Martha Kibler; they had four daughters.
