On 28 Oct 1862, he mustered into Company D with the 75th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, 11th Corps, Army of the Potomac, and served under General Oliver Howard at the Battle of Chancellorsville and at the Battle of Gettysburg. He was captured on 2 Jul 1863, during the heavy fighting at Cemetery Hill during the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg. Sometime later he rejoined his unit after being exchanged for a Confederate prisoner, as was the custom during the first 2 years of the Civil War. But in Aug 1863, the 75th Ohio Regiment was transferred with 1st Division, 11th Corps to Charleston Harbor in South Carolina, while the other two Divisions of the 11th Corps were sent to Tennessee to join General William Tecumseh Sherman for his famous march to the sea. The 75th Ohio Regiment was at Charleston from Aug to Sep 1863, when it moved to Folly Island, South Carolina, and later formed into a mounted infantry and moved to Jacksonville, Florida. In Aug 1864, a small union force was attacked near Baldwin, Florida, just west of Jacksonville by elements of the 2nd Florida Cavalry supported by some infantry. A part of 75th Ohio Regiment, mounted infantry were sent to Baldwin, Florida, in action against the 2nd Florida Cavalry. This action did not go well, and on 12 Aug 1864, Johnston was wounded and captured. The surviving Union forces retreated to Jacksonville. But by this time in the Civil War, Union and Confederate forces were no longer exchanging prisoners due to unwise decisions of more than one military general, so Johnston was sent to the Andersonville Prisoner of War camp in Georgia. The Commandant of the Camp was Captain Henry Wirz, who was tried and executed afterward for war crimes because of the horrific camp conditionsovercrowding to 4 times its capacity, inadequate water supply, inadequate food rations, no medicine and unsanitary conditions. The chief causes of death were scurvy, diarrhea, dysentery and starvation. Johnston was held in captivity from Aug 1864 until his liberation in Apr 1865. He survived and was mustered out on 25 May 1865. Just 6 months later, he married Susannah Scott on 8 Nov 1865, in Athens County, Ohio. They had 6 children during their marriage, 4 boys and 2 girls: ●George Jasper Johnston 18671934 ●Electra Johnston 1868 ●Della F Delley Johnston West Barker18691948 ●John Corine Johnston 18711940 ●James Cassius Cash Johnston 18711918 ●Warren Edward Johnston 18751963 Sometime after 1880, he and his family moved from Waterloo, Athens County, Ohio, to Washington, Ringgold County, Iowa. By the 1910 U.S. Census, they lived in Seattle, King County, Washington; and within the next 10 years they were in Los Angeles County, California. By 1932, they were in Orange County, California, where his wife, Susannah, died at the age of 90. They had been married for 66 years. After that he moved back to Washington State where he lived with one of his sons. He died at the age of 94 on 26 Jan 1938, in Richland, Benton County, Washington. He is the only Civil War veteran buried there in the Resthaven Cemetery.
