Military honors were accorded a Gloucester soldier who gave his life for his country on one of the battlefields of France, when the body of William Jenkins, son of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Jenkins, of Bena, was interred Monday in the Tidemill burying ground, following services at Bethlehem church, of which the young man was a member. The services were under the auspices of Edward G. Field Post, American Legion, and the pall bearers were Gloucester service men, all in uniform. A firing squad composed of eight men from Camp Eustis fired a volley over the grave and taps was sounded by a bugler accompanying the squad. The coffin was draped with the stars and stripes. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. E. DeShazo, pastor of Bethlehem church. A touching incident was the presentation at the close of the church service of the Bethlehem service flag, with its one gold star representing the supreme sacrifice of young Jenkins, to the mother of the dead soldier. William Jenkins died in a military hospital in France in the summer of 1918 from the effects of wounds received in action. The body rested in an American military cemetery in France until a short time ago when, with others of the American dead, it was disinterred and brought to the soil of the homeland for permanent burial.
