Great Bend, KS; GREAT BEND DAILY TRIBUNE, Wednesday, September 24, 1958, Pages 1 & 2 FIND SKELETON OF OFFERLE GI IN CALIFORNIA OFFERLE--Fifteen years after he disappeared into the desert near El Centro, Calif., the last trace of an Offerle soldier has been found, with the discovery of his skeleton in a lava bed. His family, at Offerle and Kinsley, has been awaiting final word of his death since 1943. Mrs. A.J. Kisner, widowed mother of Pvt. William P. Kisner, who disappeared while on a training maneuver with his infantry unit, told the Daily Tribune Wednesday that the first news she heard of her son's positive identification was from reading morning papers. She said she has not been notified by the Army. Mrs. Kisner said her husband, who died last February, suffered a stroke after being informed of his 34-year-old son's disappearance in July, 1943. A daughter at Kinsley said her father had hoped all during the past 15 years that he would learn further details of his son's absence or that he was officially dead. Positive identification of the soldier's skeleton was made from dentures. The remains were found last June by the El Centro sheriff's office. Kisner disappeared with his platoon on maneuvers. The other members made their way out of the desert. Kisner was declared legally dead in 1949 and his widow; who since has remarried and lives in Kinsley, received benefits for herself and her son. Pvt. Kisner completed grade and high schools in Offerle and worked for the Santa Fe railroad several years before he was drafted in 1943. He had never seen his son before his death. The soldier's widow married John Besser in Kinsley and the couple has two children. Kisner's son, William Edward, a high school sophomore, was adopted by Besser as his own child. A sister at Kinsley, Mrs. Frances Rapp, said she called H.J. Heinz, Jr., the local untertaker and he promised to expedite the shipment of Kisner's remains home to Offerle for burial. Mrs. Rapp said she did not personally know whom to contact in California. She has a son in the Air Force and another boy at home. Her husband is dead. The other Kisner sisters are Mrs. Urban Klenke at Windthorst, Kan., and Mrs. Katherine Blake of Bellflower, Calif.. (AP) -- A skeleton found on the desert last June 6 has been identified as that of a Kansas soldier who died while lost on maneuvers in 1943. The sheriff's office said the victim was Pvt. William P. Kisner, 34, Offerle, Kas., who was declared legally dead in 1949. Identification was established through teeth. The skeleton was found 40 miles northeast of El Centro in lava beds. Kisner's platoon became lost July 25, 1943. All other members made their way out of the desert.
