The headstone was shipped 18 September 1936, from Columbus, MS. Confederate Veteran W.R. Kinney pension (Arkansas #10821) was approved 28 Aug 1901, in Saline Co., AR; he indicated he served in Company I, 8th Georgia Infantry, C.S.A. from 1861-1864 and was wounded; his widow Martha E. Kinney filed for the same pension 10 Aug 1916, and stated that her husband died 27 April 1916. The 1900 US Census for Salem township, Salien County, Arkansas listed W. R. Kinney, age 58, born Nov 1841, in Georgia and his wife Martha E. Kinney, age 53, born Oct 1846, in Georgia. They had been married 35 years. The 1910 US Census for Salem township, Saline County, Arkansas listed W. R. Kinney, age 68 (c. 1842), in Georgia and his wife Martha, age 63, born in Georgia. They had been married 44 years. He indicated in column 30 that he was a survivor of the Confederate Army. The Arkansas Death Index gives his date as above and occuring in Saline County, Arkansas. Kinney, an old and respected citizen, died at the family home in Benton, Thursday afternoon. Burial will be at Scott cemetery Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. W. A. Steel. Benton Courier – 25 May 1916 Obituary on Page 8, Column 2 W. R. Kinney was born in Green county, Georgia, November 21st, 1841. He joined the Methodist church when he was 18 years of age and lived a very consistent life until the day of his death. He was one of the first to enlist in the War between the States in 1861 in his native state, and was in a number of the most serious battles of the war. He was in the awful battle of Gettysburg and later on Harlem Heights, and was seriously wounded. He returned to Georgia after the war and was married to Miss Martha E. Ruarks, of Green county, Georgia, December 5, 1865. He moved to Saline county, Arkansas in 1881, and lived in the county until his death, which occurred at the home of his son W. O. Kinney, April 27th, 1916. He leaves a wife and seven children, Will J., John H., W.O. Kinney of Benton, Walter D. of Salem, Mrs. Mollie Williams, of Germania, Mrs. Claude Wages, of Benton, and Mrs. Sallie Hutchison, of Salem. He was stricken some five years ago with that incurable and fatal trouble, Bright's disease, and was a painful sufferer the remainder of his life. He lived for a noble purpose in life and the chief aim was to be true to God and the church and to get to Heaven when he died. A good citizen, a faithful Christian, a devoted husband and a loving father has gone to his reward. He will be sadly missed. His old friend and pastor. W. A. Steel
